Little Black Girl

I was minding my own business at work, getting my morning coffee, when the President of the company walked in. We made small talk, I shared some of the account updates that I thought were appropriate. The usual. I forgot to mention that I happened to be wearing my hair natural that day, which I normally don't do, so understandable it would become a topic of conversation.

He asked me about it, said he liked it, all in all I escaped unscathed.

The next day, out of the blue, he walks into my office and says.. "The Hair, what did you do to your hair?" I looked at him plainly, confused. My hair was back in a bun today, but nothing out of the ordinary.

He wanted my natural hair back, but the way he put it was. " I mean where is your sassy hair?" I like when you have your sassy hair out, I have a good day when your hair is sassy".

Now I know when my white counterparts where their hair in braids, buns, down; nobody bats an eye...but I wear my hair natural and now my hair, and presumably I, become "sassy".

Now remember, he is the President of my company so I have to choose my words carefully. So I looked at him and managed to curb my sarcasm with a " I'm sorry to disappoint you on this fine day". He of course laughed it off and kept moving with his day not knowing how disrespectful he had actually been.

Just a reminder that no-matter how successful you are, you are still only seen as a sassy little black girl to some people at the end of the day.
