Becoming

It all started months ago when it was announced that Michelle Obama was going to write a memoir. I was very excited to hear her story. I then found out she was going to do an arena tour. I made certain that Ticketmaster sent me every notification to remind me to purchase my ticket. I was on the Megabus headed to Michigan for a weekend and I was on there looking for my ticket. I then heard about how they were selling out!! I was blessed with one of the best tickets in the house. “Becoming” is full of many lessons in life, love, career and more. I want to share with you some of the things that I learned in “Becoming” as well as the discussion with Oprah Winfrey that surprised me that Michelle Obama (Forever First Lady) and I have in common.

1.    A high school college counselor told Michelle Robinson, “I’m not sure that you’re Princeton material”

a.    An advisor at Michigan State University informed me after a rough freshmen year of college that perhaps I was not college material. Needless to say, I came back that fall with I’ll show him spirit! That I did. I graduated from MSU and of course went to med school and the rest is history. I like Mrs. Obama never went back to tell him or show what I did but someone recently said that man follows you on social media and knows what he said to you. This was one of her first they go low and we go high moments. Since she was polite enough not to put the counselor’s name in the book nor go back and confront her.

2.     Piano lessons from her Aunt Robbie

a.    I took piano lessons from Mrs. Villaruel from age 5 to 17 years old!!! I competed! I played in many recitals. I tried to do my thing instead of what my teacher asked us to do.

3.    Michelle Robinson was a box checker before she met Barack Obama. She decided she would be a lawyer because every time she told her family and parents friends that is what she was going to be they were impressed. She went to school got a GOOD job, the “right” car, just checking off all the boxes

a.    I always said I would be a doctor. I knew deep in the pit of my stomach I never wanted to practice medicine. I wanted to be involved in media by educating the masses about their health. But realistically I didn’t know anyone that had done that so why or how could I be the one to do it. I graduated from medical school and stopped checking boxes and began to swerve! Fast forward I am an entrepreneur who has a show that is seen in 45,000+ doctors offices across the country. I am still working on a few things but I quit checking boxes and go after what I want instead what I think I should do.

These are just a few of the things that I related to in the book. I am still becoming who God intends me to be. I appreciate Mrs. Obama’s memoir as an example of exactly what is possible in this amazing life.
